Gold Coast CBD – Southport
Southport, the Gold Coast CBD, has played a pivotal role in the growth of the Gold Coast and wider South East Queensland region. It was one of the first coastal resort towns in the region, later becoming the administrative and commercial centre of the Gold Coast.
Southport is focused on knowledge based employment, regional government administration, medical, retail and commercial, as well as community and recreation facilities. It has always been the pre-eminent centre of the city, with the highest concentration of employment, and with the largest share of office space (149,240m2), attracting a workforce of 24,857 people. Southport too, is the most populated centre in the city with a resident population of 28,315.
The City of Gold Coast is working to revitalise Southport as the Gold Coasts CBD. The Minister for Economic Development Queensland has announced that Southport has been declared a Priority Development Area (PDA) under the provisions of the Economic Development Act 2012.
The Southport Priority Development Area (PDA) will once again establish Southport as the definitive centre for commerce for the Gold Coast, allowing people to put into practice their entrepreneurship across the full spectrum of enterprises. The Central Business District (CBD) will provide diverse work and lifestyle opportunities, as its key employment and accommodation hub.
The PDA affirms that the Gold Coast’s CBD is open for business, has the capacity and is committed to attracting foreign investment and facilitating development. Development within the Priority Development Area will deliver a dynamic and unique CBD with a high quality urban environment. It will create the opportunity for an internationally engaged CBD that provides a point of difference, in a place of difference.
With Chinatown at its centre, commencement of light rail and an international focus on Southport Broadwater Parklands for the Commonwealth Games in 2018, the Priority Development Area will provide a central business district that is recognised for both local and international commerce, investment and ideas, and has the capacity to deliver the critical mass for business to get done on the Gold Coast. Gold Coast CBD will become a hub of innovative business, economic activity, employment, entertainment and leisure.
